Common Name The Medallion Masdevallia [refers to Appearance of the flower]

Flower Size 1.2" [3 cm]

Found in Amazonas department of northern Peru at elevations around 2000 meters as a miniature to small sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte with stout, erect ramicauls enveloped by 2 to 3, loose, tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, elliptical-obovate, subacute, gradually narrowing below into the channeled petiolate base leaf that blooms in the spring on a stout, erect, triquetrous, 10.8 to 12.8" [27 to 32 cm] long, congested, successively flowered inflorescence arising from low on the ramicaul with a bract at the base and with ribbed, imbricating, conduplicate floral bract.

"Close to M trochilus but the sepals are connate into a proportionally short tube and the synsepal is broadly expanded below. Compared to M trochilus the synsepal is only slightly inflated above the middle. It is similarily sucate along the veins and longitudinally convex between. A large roundeed swlling terminates the longitudinal callus of the petal. The lip is most distinctive with a narrowly acute, fin-like apiculum." Luer 2000

Synonyms Alaticaulia prosartema (Königer) Luer 2006
