Found in Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador in cloud forests to dwarf forests at elevations around 2000 to 3750 meters as a miniature sized, cold growing epiphyte or terrestrial with blackish, erect, coriaceous ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3 tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, dark green mottled with black, coriaceous, petiolate, narrowly elliptical leaf that gradually narrows below into the slender blackish petiole and blooms in the spring on a slender, erect, 1 to 4.2" [2.5 to 11 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence arising from low on the ramicaul and having a bract above the base and tubular floral bracts and holding the flower above the middle of the leaf height
