Found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in tepui shrublands at elevations of 1900 to 2600 meters as a small to giant sized, cold growing epiphyte or terrestrial, with a monopodial or pseudomonopodial, cane-like stem enveloped completely by imbricate, tubular, scarious sheaths below and leaf-bearing sheaths above and carrying linear, acute, gradually becoming conduplicate below into the clasping base leaves that blooms on several to many, axillary, short, single flowered inflorescence arising from the leaf axils of the pseudomonopodial cane.
