Common Name Niessen's Maxillaria [Andrea Niessen Colombia Orchid Nurserywoman current]

Found in Colombia without locality as a small sized, cool growing epiphyte with oblong, lightly compressed pseudobulbs subtended by small, papery bracts and carrying a single, apical, erect, elliptic-lanceolate, acute, narrowing below into the grooved, petiolate base leaf that blooms in the winter on an erect, arising with a new growth, to 8" [20 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence with oblanceolate, subacute, to 5" [12.5 cm] long floral bracts and carrying bell-shaped, non-fragrant flowers

Similar species include M colorata, M microtricha, M nigrescens, M tonsbergii and M longipes.
