Found in Japan, the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan in forests at elevations of 1400 to 3000 meters as a miniature to small sized, cold growing terrestrial with a slender, ridged stem with 1 to 2, basal, pale green to purple tubular sheaths and carrying 2, opposite, just below the middle of the stem, sessile, ovate-triangular, cordate to truncate below, acute apically leaves that blooms in the later spring and early summer on an erect, pubescent, 2.4 to 4" [6 to 10 cm] long, 3 to 8 flowered inflorescence with broadly ovate, very small, acute floral bracts.
