A Bolivian and Peruvian, miniature to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial or lithophytic species and occasional epiphyte occuring in cloud forests or on exposed clay slopes with brush and grass that is found at 2000 to 4700 meters in elevation with ellipsoid, oval in cross-section pseudobulbs subtended by several pairs of distichous, imbricating, articulated, evanescent, foliaceous bracts with linear-oblanceolate, attenuate to the caniculate petiole, acute, carinate mid-veined leaves narrowing below into the conduplicate, petiolate base that blooms in the spring on a basal, erect to arcuate, fractiflex, 2' [60 cm] long, congested, racemose or paniculate, several [5 to 7] flowered inflorescence arising on a mature pseudobulb through the axil of the leaf sheath.

The Orchids of the Aureum group; C mystacinum has many short fingers at the base of the lip and C rigidum has none. C aureum is bicolored and has a crown of elongate fingers at the base of the lip and C cochleatum has 3 shorter fingers at the base of the lip.
