Common Name The Lengthened Oncidium [refers tothe long inflorescence]
Flower Size 1 1/5" [3 cm]
Found in southwestern Mexico in dry forests at elevations up to 2100 meters as uncommon, medium sized, cool to cold growing, compact, epiphytic species with ovoid to ovoid-ellipsoid, compressed pseudobulbs partially enveloped basally by 2 to 4, imbricate, leaf-bearing sheaths and carrying 2, apical, oblong-ligulate to linear-lanceolate, subcoriaceous, suberect, narrowed basally, acute to obtuse leaves that blooms with an axillary, erect, 4'8" [1.4 meter] long, short branched, many flowered panicle with showy, fragrant flowers.
Similar to O fasciculatum but O oblongatum differs in the lanceolate petals instead of oblong, the basal area of the midlobe of the lip is distinctly cordate, instead of the basal line being straight, and the rachis only produces a single branch from each node instead of 3 arising from a single node and the smaller pseudobulbs and leaves of O oblongatum.
