Found in Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru in shady locations in the wet cloud forest canopy at elevations of 400 to 1600 meters as a small to medium sized, hot to cool growing epiphyte with roundish, ovate or elliptic-oblong, laterally compressed, ancipitous, dark brown or black spotted pseudobulbs partially enveloped basally by several imbricate, leaf-bearing sheaths and carrying a single, apical, linear-lanceolate, acute, conduplicate below into the elongate, petiole-like base that blooms in the spring, summer and fall on an axillary, erect to arching, racemose to paniculate, 12 to 48" [30 to 122 cm] long, many flowered inflorescence arising on a mature pseudobulb and carrying sometimes fragrant flowers.
Often cited as a synonym of O klotscheanum but differs in the narrow sepals, longer petals and much longer middle section of the lip.
