Found southern Venezuela, Guyana and Surinam and Rondonia, Roraima, Goias, Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo states of Brazil on dry plains and savannas or on rocky outcrops in shrublands and forest margins at elevations of 350 to 1600 meters as a medium sized, hot to cool growing terrestrial, lithophyte or epiphyte with clustered, ovate to elliptical, slightly compressed laterally, ancipitous, longitudinally rugose pseudobulbs partially enveloped by 2 leaf-bearing sheaths, one small and the other large and carrying 1 to 2, erect to slightly spreading, linear-lanceolate, conduplicate below into the elongate base that blooms in the fall on an axillary, oval in cross-section, dark brown flecked with green, racemose, to 39" [to 100 cm] long, several [to 10] flowered, closely spaced inflorescence arising on a newly matured pseudobulb.
CAUTION Pabst's drawing of O pirarense is what I have as O barbaceniae and his drawing of O orthostates is what I have here O pirarense. What a mess, I need better references. See also O barbaceniae/montanum! SO PLEASE USE EITHER OF THESE DETERMINATIONS WITH EXTREME CAUTION!!!!!
