Found in Morocco, Algeria, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria and Lebanon as a small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial orchid found in beech, pine, fir and oak woodlands on calcareous soils at elevations of sea level to 1800 meters with tinted brownish red, slendre stems carrying 2 to 7, basal, oval-lanceolate, spreading to near erect, unmarked leaves and 1 to 3, smaller, clasping cauline ones above that blooms in the spring and early summer with 10 to 20 flowers in a rather cylindrical, dense inflorescence.
