Flower Size .8" [2 cm] long
Found in Sao Paulo state of Brazil in gallery forests near streams at elevations around 860 meters as a small sized, cool growing terrestrial with 4 or so, asymetrically ovate, subcoriaceous, acute, dark purple adaxially and abaxizlly paler purple, margin reddish and entire, central vein dark purplelongitudinally keeled adaxially, psedopetioalte base leaves that blooms in the late summer and fall on an erect, peduncle 4 to 5.6" [10 to 16 cm] long, reddish, pubescent, provided with 6 to 11, lanceolate, adpressed sheathing bracts, rachis to 4" [10 cm] long, lateral, 12 to 22 flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, long-acuminate, longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying resupinate flowers.
"Easily recognized by the dark purple leaves with reddish margins that are present at blooming, by its sparsely pubesdcventy and reddish inflorescence and by its reddish sepals that contrasty well with the white to hyaline petals an labellum and with the spur parellel and completely adnate to the ovary. The new species is closely related to Pelexia laxa however P vinosa differs by the abscence of maculae on the leaf blade, the more congested inflorescence, the lateral sepals not decurrent, the dorsal sepal; spathulate and the labellum entiely white with an apical lobe that is tranversaly oval and triangular andf lateral lobes that are falcate. P laxa has maculae on the leaf blade, the inflorescence is more elongate and lax, the lateral sepals are decurrent, the dorsal sepal is elliptic and the lip is yellow in the middle with an apical lobe that is cordiform and with lateral lobes that are triangular."
