Flower Size .6" [1.5 cm]
Found in the western Himalayas, Chinese Himalayas, Assam, Bangladesh, eastern Himalayas, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines on shrubby slopes at elevations of 450 to 1200 [1500 to 2800 China] meters as a medium to large sized, warm to cool [cool to cold - China] growing terrestrial with a cylindrical, pubescent tuber giving rise to an erect, stem that is bracteate above and carrying on the lower half ovate-elliptic to ovate-lanceolate, acute, shortly petiolate and channeled, reticulate leaves that blooms in the late spring and early summer on a terminal, cylindric, glabrous, 3.6 to 14" [9 to 35 cm] long, subdensely many flowered inflorescence with erect, lanceolate, acuminate floral bracts and carrying sweetly scented flowers.
CAUTION The Photos by Charles Marden Fitch were IDed by Eric Christenson and published in the AOS Bulletin Vol 66 #3 1997. Found in Laos at elevations around 240 to 300 meters as a small sized terrestrial. All references to this orchid put the size as more than 11.8" [29 cm] tall so please use with caution!!!
The photos by David Kuehn appear to be much closer to what the references describe.
