Found in far eastern Russia, Shaanxi, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guanxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan in montane to subalpine forests on exposed northern facing slopes at elevations of 800 meters and above as a small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with erect, slender stems carrying 1 to rarely 2, lower, large, elliptic, oblong, acute, amplexicaul and clasping below leaves and 2 to 4, smaller, bract-like, lanceolate leaves above that blooms in the spring on an erect, 2.4 to 8.8" [6 to 22 cm] long, 7 to 20 flowered, racemose inflorescence with lanceolate bracts carrying fragrant flowers
