Found in Japan, The Ryukyus and Taiwan in broad leaved forests at elevations of 300 to 1600 meters as a miniature to medium sized, hot to cool growing terrestrial with a tuberous, fusiform rootstock giving rise to an erect to ascending stem with a basal, tubular sheath and carrying a single, broadly elliptic to ovate elliptic, obtuse to acute apically, gradually narrowing below into the basally clasping leaf that blooms in the spring on a ridged, 2 to 6" [5 to 15 cm] long, laxly 5 to 10 flowered inflorescence with 1 to 3, scattered, scale-like, lanceolate bracts and lanceolate, to ovate-lanceolate, shorter than the ovary floral bracts
