EARLY

Common Name The Helmut Pleurothallis [refers to the cucullate dorsal sepal]

Flower Size .2" [5 mm]

Found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia? in cloud forests at elevations of 1500 to 3400 meters as a medium to large sized, warm to cold growing, caespitose epiphyte and terrestrial on roadbanks and rock outcroppings with fasiculate, stout, erect ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3 loose, imbricating, tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, coriaceous, broadly ovate to elliptical, acute to subacute to obtuse, rounded to cuneate below into the elongate petiolate base leaf that blooms in the spring, summer and early fall on a fascile of few to many, subtended by a broad spathe arising from an annulus, arching, 4.8 to 7.2" [12 to 18 cm] long, racemose, simultaneously many flowered inflorescence with a shorter than the ovary floral bract.

"Typically distinguished by stout ramicauls, large broadly ovate, long-petiolate leaves, a fascile of numerous, curving or disheveled, small flowered racemes nearly as long as or longer than the leaf and subtended by a conspicuous, foliaceous spathe. The dorsal sepal is concave, and the one veined petals are narrow. The three lobed lip has erect, obtuse lateral lobes near the middle that bear a callus on the inner surface of the anterior margin and an obtuse apex with a cushion-like callus. Leaf shape can be variable and for that reason many species were described as new that are now considered synonyms of P gleatea." Luer 1998
