Common Name Imray's Pleurothallis [Collector in West Indies 1800's]

Found in The Leeward and Windward Islands, Guyana, Surinam, Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil in cloud forests as a small sized, warm to cool growing, caespitose epiphyte or terrestrial on steep embankments that occurs at elevations of 600 to 1300 meters with elongate ramicauls subtended by a scarious, semi-inflated basal bract and then another below the middle carrying a single, apical, ovate, gradually rounds out to a long petiolate base, acute leaf and blooms in the winter and spring on 1 to 3, arising through an annulus below the apex of the ramicaul, erect, 3" [7.5 cm] long, usually held on the back side of the leaf, peduncle .4 to 1.2" [1 to 3 cm] long, slender, 1.2 to 4" [3 to 10 cm] long overall, subsecund, laxly, simultaneously, 7 to 15 flowered racemose inflorescence with shorter than the pedicel floral bracts and carrying pubescent flowers held at mid leaf height.

"Vegetatively recognized by the usually large habit with a loose sheath near the middle of an elongates ramicaul that bears a broadly ovate leaf on a twisted petiolae. The flowers are borne behind the leaf in short racemes. The flowers vary in color from pure yellow to purple to purple-black. The pubescence within is variable. The small flowered variations with glabrous sepalsdescribed from Panama as P vaginata is usually cleistogamous but some cleistogamous forms elsewhere are pubescent. The petals are spathulate and the lip is arcuate and elliptical with the longitudinal calli within the margins." Luer 2000
