Common Name The Becoming Red Pleurothallis [refers to the dried flowers]
Flower Size 1/2" [1.25 cm]
Found in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil in wet montane forests at elevations of 600 to 2750 meters as a miniature sized, warm to cold growing, caespitose epiphyte with erect ramicauls enveloped by 1 to 3 large, complanate, scarious sheaths and carrying a single, apical, oblong-elliptic, subacute, blunt, coriaceous leaf that blooms in the fall on an erect to arching, subtended by a spathe and arisng through an annulus below the apex of the ramicual, 4.4" [11 cm] long, simultaneously opening, several flowered, racemose inflorescence with several close, tubular bracts and ovate, acute, sub-infundibuliform floral bracts that cover 1/2 of the ovary.
Separated from other species by the labellum with subapical, transverse ridges of blunt teeth and a very elongate, beaked clinadrial hood.
CAUTION It seems that this orchid is variable in form of sepals, petals and lip. Here are represented both Peruvian and Brazilian specimens. I only have references on the Peruvian Orchid, they are absolutely correct to Bennett & Christenson 1998.
