Common Name Saunder's Pleurothallis [English Orchid And Bromeliad Enthusiast 1800's]

Flower Size .6" [1.5 cm]

Found in Colombia, Bolivia, Peru and southeastern Brazil at elevations of 1 to 2000 meters as a small sized, hot to cool growing, long repent epiphyte with an erect ramicaul enveloped basally by a few tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, elliptic-lanceolate, obtuse, rigid, green leaf that blooms in the fall to winter on a racemose, arising from the base of the leaf 6" [15 cm] long, several flowered inflorescence with tubular, as long as to shorter than the pedicel floral bract and carrying all the flowers held in one direction.

"Characterized by the strong, long repent rhizome that gives rise to a series of suberect to erect ramicauls each with a sessile, elliptical leaf about equally as long. From the base of the leaf a relatively large, short-pedunculate, bilabiate flower is produced singly or in a successively two flowered raceme. The sepals are fleshy and mottled, suffused or striped with purple or brown. The petals are small, obovate, acute and denticulate. The lip is thick and oblong with small, marginal, erect denticulate lobes below the middle, a pair of verrucose calli on the middle third and a minute lobule at each corner of the base." Luer 21004

The in situ plant photo is from Boia Ceia', Sao Paulo State, Brazil at an elevation of 2 meters in the first scrub hammock on the beach on trunks and limbs of small trees with lichen.
