Common Name or Meaning The Simple Flowered Pleurothallis

Found in southwestern Dominican Republic at elevations around 1500 metrs as a mini-miniature sized, cool growing, caespitose epiphyte with erect, slender ramicauls enveloped by 2 loose tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, narrowly elliptic-obovate, subacute to obtuse, cuneate below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms in the later spring and fall on an erect, arising from a node near the end of the ramicaul, peduncle .28 to .4" [7 to 10 mm] long, rachis .4 to .52" [10 to 13 mm] long, simultaneously few flowered inflorescence." Luer originally put this species within SUBGENUS Specklinia SECTION Hymenodanthae SUBSECTION Longicaulae [Barb. Rodr.] Luer 1986 in 2006; Luer states in 2006" This tiny species is rare and endemic to the Dominican Republic and known only from the type. It is similar to P formondii from Haiti . Both are small caespitose plants with a simultaneously few flowered raceme. The sepals are free, carinate and acute, those of P formondii being somewhat larger with the laterals connate. The spathulate petals odf P simpliciflora are minutely erose, The lip of both are longitudinally channeled between marginal calli below a low callus near the apex. The column foot lacks the calli seen in P formondii. Doucette, while moving the species to Acianthera in 2016, I have left it within its old Subgenus Acianthera within Pleurothallis."
