Found in Colombia and Pichincha province of Ecuador at elevations of 2300 to 3000 meters as a small sized, cold growing terrestrial or probable epiphyte, with fleshy villose roots giving rise to 1 to 3, basal, rosulate, villose throughout, oblanceolate, acute to sub-acuminate, gradually tapering below into the sub sessile to 1.6" [4 cm] long, petiolate base leaves that blooms late winter and early spring on an erect to somewhat arcuate, peduncle 4.8 to 6.8" [12 to 17 cm] long, without sheathing bracts, rachis 2 to 3.2" [5 to 8 cm] long, villose throughout, few flowered inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, villose, much shorter the the ovary floral bracts.
" P. appendiculata is easily separated from other representatives of the genus by its peculiar lip form, which is triangular in outline with a replicate base. It is excised in the shape of a reversed V. The lip apex has a circular, cochleate callus, extending in a ligulate-cymbiform tip, and the base has broadly spread, tubular lateral lobes."
