Common Name Brenes' Ponthieva [Costa Rican Botanist 1900's]
Flower Size .8" [2 cm]
Found in Costa Rica and Panama in lower montane rainforests at elevations of 1200 to 1600 meters as a small sized, cool and pendant growing epiphyte [never a terrestrial] with a short stem carrying 1 to 4, erect to suberect, densely pilose, elliptic-lanceolate, somewhat acuminate, gradually narrowing below into the narrow, subpetiolate base base leaves that blooms in the spring on a pendant, peduncle .8 to 7.2" [2 to 18 cm] long, provided with a few sheathing bracts, to 2.4 to 5.6" [6 to 14 cm] long, pilose, to 10 flowered inflorescence with erect-open to suberect, elliptic, acuminate, densely hairy, half as long as the ovary floral bracts and carrying inverted flwoers.
Now considered by Kew to be synomonous with Ponthieva villosa but I have left them separate pending more research.
