Common Name Castaneda's Ponthieva [R Romero-Castaneda Co-collector of the type species current]

Found in Magdalena department of Colombia in fields and forests at elevations of 2400 to 2600 meters as a miniature to small sized, cold growing terrestrial with 2 to 3, basal, rosulate, ovate, oblong-lanceolate to oblong ovate, acute, glabrus, petiolate base leaves that blooms in the early fall on an erect, terminal, peduncle 4.4 to 10" [11 to 25 cm] long, delicate, erect, glabrous, glandular, provided with three cauline sheaths, rachis to 1.2" [3 cm] long, loosely few flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, glabrous, , much shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying small, whote flowers with sparsely glandular sepals.

"Similar to Ponthieva parvilabris but the lip of P castanedae is prominently auriculated basally and devoid of any calli and the claw margins are upcurved forming a kind of channel directed tothe base of the lip. P parvilabris has a semiterete lip claw with the lamina possesing a cuneate base and a pair of keel-like, fleshy calli at the base. Additionally the petal claw of the species is shorter than the lower lobe whereas in P parvilabris the petal claw is as long as or longer than the lower lobes. The lateral sepals of P catanedae are obliquely ovate versus obliquely elliptic-ovate in P parvilabris. Can be distinguished from all others in the Rostrata gropup by having a relatively wide claw with upcurved margins. The claw of the lateral lobes are oblong-elliptic and the base of the lamina is cordate" Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2019
