Found in southern Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina as a medium to large sized, cool growing terrestrial in savannahs with an erect, strict, terete stem without lanceolate-linear, acute leaves at blooming, that blooms in the winter on an erect, peduncle 20 to 32" [50 to 80 cm] long, provided with 5 to 8, membraneous, smooth, adpressed, with the apex somewhat open sheathing bracts, rachis, erect, strict, 3.2 to 4" [8 to 10 cm] long, loosely many flowered inflorescence with erect to erect-patent, somewhat membraneous, slightly concave, obscurely 7 to 9 nerved, longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying erect to erect-patent, green flowers.
The variety major differs in the longer stem 20 to 40" [50 to 100 cm] long, peduncle proivided with 10 to 11 sheathing bracts, a laxer, longer rachis that is 7.2 to 7.6" [18 to 19 cm] long, with long acuminate floral bracts and a longer, 1" [2.5 cm] long pedicellate ovary and carrying lateral flowers
