Common Name Powell's Sarcoglottis

Found in Matagalpa department of Nicaragua, the Canal Zone of Panama and Venezuela in damp sunny locations, on rocks in humus in deep shade of low hills at elevations up to 500 meters as a medium to just large sized, hot to warm growing terrestrial with 4 to 5, in a basal rosette, usually present at blooming, spathulate, oblong-obovate-obloanceolate, acute to acuminate, gradually attenuate below into the petiolate base leaves that blooms in the late winter and early spring on an erect, terminal, peduncle 17.2 to 22" [43 to 55 cm] long, slender, minutely and sparsely glandular towards the apex, provided with 6 to 7, tubular, acute, longer than the internodes except the uppermost, herbaceous, glabrous sheathing bracts, rachis densely glandular, 2.4 to 6.6" [6 to 16.5 cm] long, lax to subdense, all-sided, 4 to 10 flowered inflorescence with oblong obovate-lanceolate, acuminate, herbaceous, thin, delicate, hyaline margined, almost glabrous, sometimes basally sparsely glandular outside, somewhat shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying rather large, arched at the apex, tubular in the lower part, brown, yellow green to apple green with the lip and dorsal sepal dark veined.

Very similar to Sarcoglottis acaulis but S powellii features a noticeable V-shaped callus located at the base of the epichile, while in contrast, S acaulis has a rather obscure thickening between the epichile and the hypochile along the line of curvation of the epichile."
