Common Name Schaffner's Sarcoglottis [German Botanist 1800's]

Found in Veracruz and Chiapas states of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and El Salvador in broadleafed forests at elevations around 800 to 1800 meters as a medium sized, warm to cool growing terrestrial herb with 2 to 3, basal, green, silver rayed, silver beneath, strongly carinate, broadly lanceolate, elliptic to obovate-oblong, slightly oblique, acute to shortly acuminate, narrowly petiolate base leaves that blooms in the spring on an erect, terminal, peduncle 7 to 20" [17.5 to 50 cm] long, reddish brown, glabrous below, white pubescent above, provided with 6, glabrous, uppermost glandular at the base sheathing bracts, rachis 2.4 to 2.8 (7.8)" [6 to 7 (19.5) cm] long, laxly to subdense, 7 to 9 (30) flowered inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate, acute to acuminate, sparsely glandular, shorter than the ovary floral bracts.

"The plants bear leaves during blooming, the leaves shortly petiolate, elliptic, variously whitish-green variegated with a dark green, velvety background and the prominent somewhat three lobed mentum are characteristic. The flowers are pale green with darker veins. The orchid is similar to Sarcoglottis assurgens which is leafless at flowering, has flesh colored flowers with green and orange lines."
