Found in Madagascar in grasslands rocky outcrops and near forests at elevations of 1200 to 2000 meters as a large sized, warm to cold growing terrestrial with ovoid-oblong tubers giving rise to a basally sheathed, stem carrying several, oval-acute, flat, plicate leaves that blooms in the late spring, summer and early fall on an erect, 10 to 16" [25 to 40 cm] long, densely many flowered inflorescence enveloped basally by lanceolate, green recurved bracts and carrying non-resupinate flowers.
