Found in Cape Province, Natal and Transvaal South Africa as well as Lesotho in damp montane grasslands in shallow soil over bedrock at elevations of 1000 to 2500 meters as a medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with 6 to 11, radical leaves as well as upper 4 to 6, glabrous cauline leaves that blooms in the summer on a subcapitate, 5 to 30 flowered inflorescence and carrying mild sweet but unpleasant scented flwoers
