Found in England, Ireland, Aluetians, Alaska, North West Territories, Yukon, Alberta, Br. Columbia, Manitoba, Saskachuan, Ontario, Quebec, Prine Edward Island, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, N Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconson, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusets, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Northern Mexico in tundra, bogs, open woodlands and littoral areas as a small to medium sized, cold growing terrestrial orchid with 3 to 6, linear-lanceolate, basal leaves that climb the stem after as bracts and blooms in the summer and early fall on a terminal, to 20" [50 cm] long, many flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acuminate, shorter than the ovary floral bract and holding the 60, fragrant flowers in three spiralling rows.
