Found in Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia in open upland grasslands at elevations of 1950 to 2400 meters as a medium sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial with globose to ovoid, tomentose tubers giving rise to an erect, sterile stem carrying 3 to 4 lanceolate, acute leaves and a fertile, erect, rather slender to stout, leafy throughout, purplish in upper half, loosely sheathing, imbricate leaves taht blooms in the late spring and early summer on an erect, 3.6 to 6" [9 to 15 cm] long, dense, many flowered inflorescence
