Common Name The Freckled Stelis

Found in Santander and Cundinamarca departments of Colombia, Pichincha province of Ecuador, Peru? and northwestern Venezuela? at elevations around 2700 to 2900 meters as a miniature sized, cold growing, caespitose epiphyte with an abbreviated stem enveloped basally by 2 to 3, scarious, tubular, acute sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, oblong-elliptic, subacute, gradually narrowing below into the elongated petilolate base leaf that blooms in the spring and fall on an erect, through a spathe from an annulus below the apex of the ramicaul, peduncle 1.2" [3 cm] long, rachis 2 to 3" [5 to 6 cm] long, loosely, successively few, several flowered inflorescence with infundibular, acuminate, oblique, longer than the ovary floral bracts and carrying unknown colored flowers.

"A small plant less that 2" [5 cm] tall and witha reaceme that esceeds the narrow leaf. The sepals are glabrous and broadly ovate, the petalsa re single veined and the lip, a discoid varitation of type "B", is shallowly concave and pyriform in outline with the apex broadly rounded. The length of the lip is what appears to be thickeness. the depth is the distance from the base to the tip." Luer 2009

"This uncommon little species is little more than a small variation of Stelis jamesonii Lindl. It is distinguished by a smaller, more delicate habit, and a shorter inflorescence with a congested raceme of flowers with short pedicels. The shallowly concave, subdiscoid lip is similar to that of S. jamesonii." Luer 2018
