Common Name The Creeping Stelis

Flower Size .08" [2 mm]

Found in La Vega province of Dominican Republic, Haiti and Pataza, Imbabura and Zamora-Chinchipe provinces of Ecuador at elevations around 900 to 2250 meters as a mini-miniature sized, warm to cold growing, shortly repent epiphyte with ascending, slender ramicauls enveloped by 2 to 3 tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, narrowly elliptical, subacute to acute, narrowly cuneate below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms in the late spring, summer and fall on an erect, arising through a spathe from below the apex of the ramicual, secund, subdense, 1.2 to 1.6" [3 to 4 cm] long including the .6" [1.5 cm] long peduncle, mostly simultaneously several flowered inflorescence with oblique, tubular, shorter than the ovary floral bracts and carrying green flowers with the glabrous sepals paler than the central apparatus.

"This little, repent species described from Hispaniola is also known from the Andes, by three collections in Ecuador, and this single collection from Bolivia. The rhizome is long-repent, producing ramicauls, about as long as the leaf, every five to .6" [15 millimeters]. The delicate raceme of tiny flowers is about as long. The sepals are acute, apiculate and single-veined to the naked eye, with the lateral sepals antrorse; the petals are single-veined; and the lip is triangular at the apex, and the body modified with erect, lateral lobes. The Bolivian collection is vegetatively larger than the other known collections of the species. All produce minute flowers, the floral parts of the Bolivian collection varying in a few minor details from those given in Luer 2009." Luer & Vasquez 2018
