Common Name Mille's Stenorrhynchos [American Orchid Collector South America 1900's]
Flower Size .2" [5 to 6 mm]
Found in Pichincha province of Ecuador in subandean montane forests as a medium sized, cool growing terrestrial with fasciculated, fleshy roots giving rise to a rosette of 4 to 6, erect-patent, elliptic, acumiante, glabreous, narrowing below into an elongate [as long as the blade] petiolate base leaves that blooms in the winter on an erect, terete, glabrous, strict to substrict, peduncle 8 to 16" [20 to 40 cm] long, provided with 4 to 7, closely embracing, acuminate sheathing bracts, rachis to 4" [10 cm] long, oblong to cylindrical, densely multi-flowered inflorescence with colored, lanceolate-elliptic, acuminate, usually longer than the ovary floral bracts carrying showy, whitish flowers
CAUTION!!!I feel that the photo could be quite suspect as this species when written up by Schlechter with who the name stands now, states that the "flowers are whitish, bracts are colored" which would apply to this species if the sepals were'nt red as well. I have seen no drawing of the type or any subsequent author to support or deny the photo determination, so suspect. Research needs to be done here. In all reality It seems that the whole genus is fairly vague at this point. Only !Stenorrhynchos speciosum and Stenorrhynchos vaginatum seem to be well defined at this time, the rest are tenuous.
