Common Name The Navarro Coccineorchis [A town in Costa Rica]

Flower Size

Found in Costa Rica and Panama in cloud forests at elevations of 850 to 4100 meters as a medium sized, warm to cold growing terrestrial with 4 to 7, basal, membraneous, narrowly to broadly ovate, acuminate, often oblique, gradually narrowing below into the elongate, petiolate base leaves that blooms at most any time of the year on a terminal, erect, peduncle 8.8 to 17" [22 to 42.5 cm] long, rather stout, glandular to glabrous, provided with 3 to 6, tubular, acute, herbaceous, glabrous,, shorter to longer than the internodes, lower green, upper ones red, to greenish red, rachis 1.4 to 3" [3.5 to 7.5 cm] long, rather dense, erect facing, 5 to 20 flowered inflorescence with usually red, greenish red, magenta to orange, as long as the flower floral bracts and carrrying conspicuous, usually yellow, but also orange, red, orange red tipped with red or red without flowers with a yellowish lip.

"The flowers are similar to the flowers of C standleyi differing mostly in the lip, but the plants are different in the gradually narrowing leaf base into the petiolate base leaf and the corymbose inflorescence with erect flowers versus an abrupt leaf base and a more lax inflorescence with the flowers facing in all directions.
