Found in Ecuador and Peru in cold wet montane forests at elevations of 2100 to 2300 meters as a small to just medium sized, cold growing terrestrial with several, basal, lanceolate, acuminate leaves and a few leaflike bracts on the stem decreasing in size upwards that blooms in the late fall and winter on a terminal, erect, pubescent, densely many flowered inflorescence enveloped by overlapping, tubular, pubescent bracts and lanceolate, acuminate, pubescent flora lbracts that are longer than the ovaries which are adpressed [type for S macrostachys] or not [type for S peruviana] to the rachis and carrying non-resupinate flowers.
