We are going to explore how to divide a plant. This is a pictoral guide so please click on the Photos.

Orchids need to be divided on a regular basis. Most plants need dividing within a year or two of purchase. Typically Cattleyas with more than 8 psuedobulbs can be divided into 2 plants.

Our demonstration here is with a 12 psuedobulbed Cattleya hybrid Notice that the 12 psuedobulbs are listed 1 through 12. The newest growth is # 1 and the oldest is #12.

I am going to divide this plant at the point with the red arrows. This will leave 4 psuedobulbs in the front and 8 in the back.

Cutting is done with pruning shears that have been sterilized with fire or chemical.

Always remove the tag and save to put in the new pot. Also remove any pot clips and wires.
