Found in the north of the north Island of New Zealand in lowland tea tree scrub on sunny tracksides at elevations of sealevel to 200 meters as a medium to large sized, cold growing terrrestrial with a single, erect, green with red near the base, keeled leaf that blooms in the late winter and earlier spring on an erect, rusty red, to 12 flowered inflorescence .

Similar to T pauciflora but differs in the amount of cilia on the column wings. This species pereviously was thought to be an aberrant form of T pauciflora.
