Found in New Guinea at elevations around 1200 meters as a large to giant sized, cool growing epiphyte with an elongate, flexuous, minutely puberulous rhizome giving rise to simple, elongate, terete, leafy pseudobulbs carrying erect-patent, glabrous,coriaceous, ligulate, unequally and obtusely bilobed apically leaves that blooms in the fall on a lateral, arcuate-patent, short, to 5.2" [13 cm] long, sublaxy 10 to 15 flowered inflorescence carrying rusty hairy flowers.
Schlechter states that the flowers are brown red with brownish white petals and lip. He also states that this is the largest of the Papuan species.
