Found in the Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, China, Assam, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, eastern Himalayas, Nepal, Andaman Islands, Thailand, Vietnam, New Guinea and the Philippines in shady locales in tropical rain, evergreen hill and seasonal evergreen forests or along ravines at elevations of 100 to 1400 meters as a small to medium sized, hot to cool growing terrestrial with a stem carrying 3 to 7, ovate to ovate-elliptic, green and usually with a white midrib above, petiolate base leaves that blooms in the winter and early spring on an erect, terminal, laxly several flowered, pubescent inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate, red-brown, hairy bracts and carrying small, fragrant flowers
