Common Name Cowen's Bulbophyllum
Flower Size 1 1/4" [ 3 cm]
Found in Laos near the Thai Border and central Vietnam at elevations of 800 to 1500 meters as a small sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte with a creeping, woody rhizome giving rise to adpressed to the rhizome, close set, ellipsoid, slightly ribbed pseudobulbs carring a single, apical, erect, elliptic-lanceolate leaf that blooms in the spring on a basal, erect to patent, provided with with 2 to 3 bracts, ,4 to .48" [1 to 1.2 cm] long, single flowered inflorescence with tubular, shorter than the ovary floral bracts.
"Bulbophyllum coweniorum belongs to the group of closely related species of B. lobbii Lindl. complex including B. microglossum Ridl. (found in Thailand, Malacca Peninsula, Kalimantan), B. smitinandii Seidenf. et Thorut (Thailand, Vietnam) and B. orectopetalum Garay, Hamer et Siegerist (Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos), but differs in the purple spotted tepals and purple lip ciliate at the base and lacking central callus on the disk near the base."
