Bulbophyllum putaoensis Q.Liu 2017 SECTION Brachyantha Rchb.f 1861
LATER
Common Name The Putao Bulbophyllum [A town in Kachin State of Myanmar]
Flower Size
Found in Myanmar in tropical mountain rain forest, at elevations around 830 meters as a miniature to small sized, warm growing epiphyte with a creeping rhizome enveloped by fibrous sheaths giving rise to ridged, narrowly ovoid pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical, narrowly oblong, erect, apex obtuse, base narrowing into a petiolate base leaf that blooms in the later spring on a basal, erect, shorter than leaf, peduncle glabrous, light green with densely purple spots, provided with 2 distant, tubular sheaths, umbellate, often 4 to 5 flowered inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate, creamy-white with purple spots, acuminate, shorter than the floral bracts.
"Morphologically, Bulbophyllum putaoensis is similar to B. umbellatum Lindley and shares the umbellate inflorescence, twisted lateral sepals and column with triangular wings, but differs from it by having lanceolate petals (petals widely ovate in B. umbellatum), oblong anther cap (anther cap subglobose in B. umbellatum )and significant viscidium of pollinarium (pollinarium without viscidium in B. umbellatum). Bulbophyllum putaoensis is also similar to B. guttulatum and B. salweenensis X.H. Jin in having an elliptic-oblong leaves, sheathed pseudobulbs, purple-spotted flowers and winged column. However, the pinkish yellow flower, petals with widely ovate with papillose margin and ovoid anther cap in B. guttulatum differ from B. putaoensis (pale greenish yellow flower, lanceolate petals without papillose margin and oblong anther cap); B. salweenensis has the lanceolate and denticulate petals, lip with a longitudinal pink ridge and pollinarium without viscidium significantly distinguish with the B. putaoensis (lanceolate petals without denticulate, lip without a longitudinal pink ridge and pollinarium with viscidium)" QIANG LIU, SHI-SHUN ZHOU, REN LI, MING-XIA ZHANG, MYINT ZYAW, SHWE LONE & RUI-CHANG QUAN 2017
