Found in Colombia and Ecuador in cloud forests at elevations of 2450 to 3100 meters as a large to giant sized, cold growing terrestrial with cane-like, terete, erect, branching apically stems carrying numerous on the main and 3 to 11 on the branches, elliptic to lanceolate, unequally bilobed apically, subcoriaceous, all along the stem leaves that blooms in the spring and summer on a terminal, arching, short, racemose, 10 to 40 flowered inflorescence with simultaneously opening, resupinate, greenish white to green flowers.
"Epidendrum brevicernuum belongs to the GROUP Andean SUBGROUP Cernuum characterized by the monopodial habit, cane-like stems with subapical branches which are considerably shorter than the main stem, coriaceous to sub-coriaceous leaves, and fleshy flowers, the lip entire or 3-lobed. The species has subspherical inflorescence, greenish white to green flowers, a 3-lobed lip, with the lobes subequal, the wide keel on the disk and the short dorsal keels of the 5-veined sepals, separate this species from E. cernuum Kunth which is close but has a long inflorescence, somewhat like a fox-tail, with brown and yellow flowers, the midlobe of the lip is longer than broad, the lateral lobes much smaller, the lateral sepals are prominently aristate, and the sepals 3-veined. Epidendrum guagra-urcuense Hágsater & Dodson has a pandurate lip and erose-fimbriate, funnel-shaped clinandrium, leaves up to 5.4 x 1.04" [13.5 x 2.6 cm]." Hagsater etal 2001
