Found Yunnan province of China in limestone forests on tree trunks or on rocks at elevations of 1550 to 1650 meters as a miniature to small sized, cool growing epiphyte with a pendulous, slender, unbranched, spotted with red stem carrying alternate,distichous, ovate, significantly serrate margin, acuminate, with 2 apical awns, purple spotted abaxially and sometimes on the adaxial leaves that blooms in the late winter and early spring on severa;, opposite the leaves, peduncel [.9 to 1.1 cm] long, slender, provided in the lower partewith 2 cupular bracts, the upper part enlarged, subumbellate, 2 to 3 flowered inflorescence with ovate-lanceolate floral bracts

"Gastrochilus prionophyllus is similar to G. distichus and G. corymbosus, but can be distinguished by having thick fleshy leaves and a distinct serration on the leaf margin, smaller flowers, reniform epichile with dentations at the margin and thickened cushion on the central epichile, and subconic hypochile."
