Found in Aguascalientes?, Durango? and Jalisco states of Mexico in on rocky slopes in forest pine and oak forest, 2100 to 2200 meters as a miniature sized, cool growing terrestrial with a pendulous, ovoid-elipsoid, tuber with shallow grooves arranged in no apparent order giving rise to an erect stem carrying 7, cauline, imbricate, at the base reduced to sheaths, the sides gradually extended and recurved in the basal leaves, distal part arched, above ascending, recti-linear and similar to floral bracts, erect or adpressed, somewhat conduplicate, the largest located in the middle part; lamina elliptical to elliptic-lanceolate, subacute, with acute epiculus, up to 1.2" [3 cm] long, .56" [1.4 cm] wide, with three main ribs and numerous additional nerves, the dense reticulum, the hyaline nerves and reticulum on an emerald green background, furrowed, carinate, the scabbard very short, slightly dilated upwards leaves that blooms in the mid summer on a terminal, erect, angled by the decurrence of the carinas of the floral bracts, usually 2 to 3 flowered inflorescence adpressed, semi-amplexicaul, conduplicate, elliptical, obtuse-rounded with acute epiculus, conspicuous, emerald green, multinervia, the reticulum very dense, translucent, furrowed, with as long as the ovary floral bracts and carrying short lived, white flowers
" Habenaria karinae is related with H. schaffneri , but it is distinguished by the fact that the anterior segment is shorter than the posterior lobe and the lateral lobes shorter than the central lobe and the claviform nectary. Habenaria schaffneri is characterized by ovate leaves in mostly, ovate-lanceolate above, 1 to 1.48" [1.2.5 to 3.7 cm] long; the anterior segment of the petals a little larger than the posterior segment; the labellum with the blade .2" [5 mm] long, the lateral lobes narrow and linear-subfiliform, .44" [11 mm] long; the narrow , lingual or linearoblong, middle lobe .28 to .4" [7 to 10 mm] long; the very arched, free spur of the bract, .8"[ 2 cm] in length long, dilated towards the apex and acuminate.
