Found in Sao Paulo state of Brazil near Santos, Surinam and Colombia at elevations around 1200 to 2700 meters as a medium sized, cool to cold growing terrestrial with pilose tubers giving rise to an erect, slender stem carrying 4 to 10, linear-lanceolate, acute, erect, dark bluish green leaves that blooms in the winter on a terminal, erect, 1.2 to 4.8" [3 to 12 cm] long, laxly few to many flowered inflorescence with lanceolate, acute, half as long as the ovary floral bracts and carrying green flowers.

Similar to H santensis but H caldense is a larger plant, up to 20" [50 cm], has wider leaves .32 to .6" .8 to 1.5 cm] versus .24 to .32" .6 to .8 cm, much longer floral bracts to 1.2" [3 cm] versus .6 to .72" [1.5 to 1.8 cm] long, as well as the spur 1.2 to 2" [3 to 5 cm] versus .68 to 1.2" [1.5 to 1.8 cm] long. Also similar to H lehmanniana but H santensis has narrower leaves .32 to .6" [ .8 to 1.5 cm] versus .56 to .8" [1.4 to 2 cm], and length of the pedicellate ovary .72 to 1" [1.8 to 2.5 cm] versus 1.32 to 1.6" [3.3 to 4 cm] long, the flowers are somewhat smaller versus a bit larger." CAUTION!!!!! Some references place this species as a synonym of H rodeiensis or H tamanduensis.
