"Similar to H lehmannniana but has smaller flowers a shorter spur and a different fdorm of the petals, lip and rostellum. Esapecially interesating is the rostellum, H smithii is deeply 3 dentate with all teeth acute, whereas H lehmanniana is shallowly 3 dentate with blunt teeth. Batista etal 2011 considered this species to be conspecific with H trifida but in H smithii the spur is blunt not bifid at the apex." Szlachetko & Kolanowska 2017
