Found in Zamora-Chinchipe province of southern Ecuador and northern Peru at elevations around 1500 meters as a mini-miniature to miniature sized, cool growing epiphyte with erect, stout ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3 loose, tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, thickly coriaceous, elliptic-obovate, subacute to obtuse, gradually narrowing below into the channelled, elongate petiolate base leaf and blooms in the winter on an erect, basal, arsing from the base of the ramicaul with a basal bract, congested, few flowered, stout, triquetrous, racemose inflorescence with imbricating, tubular, shorter than the pedicel floral bracts all usually carrying 2 simultaneous flowers.

"Related to M bicolor , but is distinctly different with its 2 simutaneous rosy red brown flowers with rosy red-brown tails are held above leaves by a strict, triquetrous peduncle. Beyon the tube the synsepal is expanded with slightly recurving sides, not concave as seen in M bicolor. The tail of the dorsal sepal is at lest as long as the blade and the tails of the lateral sepals are distinctly shorter than the blades. Within the sepaline tube, the petals, lip and column are similar to those of the variable M bicolor. M barrowii has the apices of the peatls are retuse between a pair of thickened angles, but the apices of others related to M bicolor are variable. The paex of the lip is recurved, but the lip of allies species ia also variable." Luer 2002
