Flower Size 3/4" [2 cm]

Found in Morona-Santiago province of Ecuador in cloud forests at elevations around 1000 meters as a small sized, caesptose, warm to cool growing epiphyte from with stout, erect ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3 loose, tubular sheaths carrying an oblanceolate, single, apical, coriaceous, tapering to a conduplicate base leaf that blooms in the spring on an erect to suberect, arising from low on the ramicaul with a short basal bract, slender, 5" [12.5 cm] long, triquetrous, successively single, few flowered inflorescence and an oblique, imbricating, shorter to as long as the pedicel floral bract that are held at or above the leaf height.

"Characterizeed by a rigid, purple and orange flower that does not open widely. Although the dorsal sepal is connate only to the middle, the blade and tail arch forward over the boat-like synsepal. The tips of the lateral sepals are contiguous with short recurving tails. Closely allied to M calagrasalis but distinguished by the rigid, boat-shaped synsepal with approximate apices. The petals of both species are purple with a descending, basal tooth." Luer 2000
