Common Name The Little Boat Masdevallia [refers to the Cymbiform synsepal]
Flower Size .15" [3 cm]
Found in Morona-Santiago province of Ecuador and Amazonas department of Peru at elevations of 1300 to 1500 meters as a miniature sized, cool growing epiphyte with stout erect ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3 tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, narrowly elliptic-obovate, subacute to obtuse, narrowly cuneate below into the petiolate base leaf that blooms in the summer on a stout, arising from low on the ramicaul with a basal bract, suberect to descending, triquetrous, 3.2 to 5.6" [8 to 14 cm] long, congested, racemose, successively few single flowered inflorescence with imbricating, longer than the pedicel floral bracts.
~Similar to M descendens, if the peduncle is erct, the rachis will curve downwards. The petiolare of the leaf is longer than most other related species. The flower is rigidly fleshy with the tail of the dorsal sepla surving forward over the warty surfaces of the connate lateal sepals. The apices of he synsepal are obtuse and contracted into very short tails. The petals are oblong with the longitudinal callis ending in an erect, conical projection. The epichile of the lip is spiculate-verrucose." Luer 2000
