Common Name or Meaning Thien's Masdevallia [American Botanist 1900's]

Found in Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador in rainforests at elevations around 100 to 1000 meters as a miniature sized, hot to warm growing epiphyte with slender, erect ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 to 3, loose tubular sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, coriaceous, elliptical, acute, cuneate below into the channeled petiolate base leaf that blooms in the spring, summer and fall on a horizontal, arising from low on the ramicaul, with 3 distant bracts, slender, 3.6 to 8" [9 to 20 cm] long, subcongested, successively few flowered, racemose inflorescence with tublar, shorter than the ovary floral bracts.

"Similar to Masdevallia sprucei but differs in the bilabiate lip and the different inflorescence.
