Common Name The Leathery Heart-Shaped Leaf Pleurothallis

Flower Size .4" [1 cm]

Found in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in cloud forests at elevations of 1200 to 3800 meters as a medium to large sized, cool to cold growing, caespitose epiphyte with slender to stout, erect ramicauls enveloped basally by 2 close tubular sheaths and another on the lower third and carrying a single, apical, suberect to spreading, coriaceous, ovate to narrowly ovate, acute, lightly acuminate, basally sessile and deeply cordate leaf that blooms in the spring and summer on sometimes several, arising from the apex of the ramicaul through a spathe, fascile of short, successive, singler flowered infloresence with a tubular, shorter than the pedicel floral bract.

"Vegetatively like many others, but the flowers, however, are sufficiently constant in morphology to permit easy recognition. One to several, large, brownish [sometimes "polished" or striped], bilabiate, resupinate flowers are producesd simultaneously atop the leaf. The dorsal sepal and synsepal are ovate and acute. The dorsal is three veined, the synsepal is convex with slightly recurved sides with the lip exposed. The petals are narrowly triangular, acute, usually minutely denticulate, shorter than the lip and commonly pointed laterally and downward from the junction of the sepals. The lip is lingulate and obtuse, at least twice as long as broad. The surface is slightly convex and variably glabrous to minutely or microscopically verrucose with denticulate margins. A small glenion is present above the deflexed base." Luer 2005
